IAS Age Limit: General OverviewThe UPSC has set age limits for candidates across different categories to ensure equal opportunities for everyone. The minimum age to appear for the IAS examination is 21 years, while the upper age limit varies depending on the candidate’s category. Here’s a quick look at the IAS age limits for different categories:
General category: 32 yearsOther Backward Classes (OBC): 35 yearsScheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST): 37 yearsPersons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): 42 years for General, 45 years for OBC, and 47 years for SC/ST candidatesIt’s important to note that the age limit is calculated as of August 1st of the examination year.
Relaxations and Number of AttemptsIn addition to the age limit relaxations, the UPSC also provides a specific number of attempts for each category:
General category: 6 attemptsOBC: 9 attemptsSC/ST: Unlimited attempts till they reach the upper age limitPwBD: 9 attempts for General and OBC candidates; unlimited attempts for SC/ST candidates till they reach the upper age limitCertain relaxations are also available for candidates who have served in the armed forces, ex-servicemen, and candidates from Jammu and Kashmir. These relaxations are subject to specific conditions laid down by the UPSC.
